I give regular talks and workshops at ELT conferences and other events, including the annual IATEFL conference, BALEAP events and other events organized by publishers in the UK and abroad. I enjoy presenting and it’s a great opportunity to chat to a fascinating range of teachers in different contexts. A recording of my 2012 IATEFL presentation is available via YouTube. And I’ve written about talks and training sessions in Riyadh, Oxford, Poland, Liverpool, Berlin, and elsewhere on my blog.
I run teacher training workshops in my areas of special interest, including teaching vocabulary, EAP and writing skills. See my blog post about a full-day workshop I ran for teachers in Moscow in 2017. I’ve also been involved in the English Language Teachers Summer Seminar programme at the University of Oxford (visit website). This is a teacher training course held each summer at Exeter College, Oxford for a wonderfully international group of EFL teachers. In 2013, I led a week of workshops on Teaching EAP and in 2014 and 2015, I gave workshops on Teaching Advanced Writing Skills.
I’ve delivered professional development webinars for OUP and others, especially on EAP-related topics. These reach teachers from across the world – it’s not uncommon to have teachers from Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, Kenya, Italy and Brazil attending the same webinar! Recordings of these can be found in the OUP webinar archive.
Alongside my writing work, I taught on EAP pre-sessional courses at Bristol University for almost 10 years. It was a chance to get back into the classroom for a few weeks each year, to try out ideas and to get new inspiration, and it’s where I developed my particular interest in EAP.
